Notes from the Field

2025 Volunteer Recruitment Begins!

We are fresh off a momentous year for The New Garden Society. We celebrated an entire decade of teaching and gardening alongside incarcerated adults and youth in Greater Boston - nearly 1000 individual students across 9 corrections facilities. We closed out the season coming together with friends and community partners for the largest event our organization has thrown, which kicked off our most successful fundraising season yet. We are ready to ride this momentum and start the 2025 season strong.

Looking ahead, we hope to expand to a third site this year and provide more frequent and accessible workshops. Our volunteer educators who come to facilities and share their professional knowledge are paramount to our continued growth, and our recruitment is about to begin! We hope to welcome new volunteers to help us continue to show up for students. We are doing outreach in the coming weeks! Right around the corner, we will be tabling at SEMAP’s Winter Conference the first weekend of February. Later in the month, we will be hosting a  Virtual Open House - anyone interested in volunteering or guest presenting with us is strongly encouraged to attend. This is your chance to hear from current and past volunteers, gain further perspective on the scope of the work and our commitment requirements, and  the opportunity to get to know some members of our team! Then in March, catch us at the Gardner’s Gathering. . We are excited to get back to the gardens, and hope you’ll meet us there!

TNGS Celebrates 10 Years of Prison Gardens!

New Garden Party Exceeds Expectations

We’re still delighting in memories of The New Garden Party! Over 100 guests gathered to listen to the botanical stylings of Skooby Laposky, share comfort food by NECAT, and hear from our students, volunteers, founders, and friends. We raised thousands of dollars to jumpstart our 2025 season. Many thanks to Mark Mathis Photography for the images of our event included here.

Grateful For Our Community

As we look back at the many small efforts that went into creating this community celebration, we’re grateful for everyone who reserved a ticket, donated resources, and especially those who were able to join us in person. You have all made it a pleasure to look back on ten years of work in and for prison gardens. Please stay in touch and continue to share our work!
